Cape buffalo hunts run on the same 11,000+ acre property as our plains game — wild, free-ranging animals in the Limpopo bushveld, guided by outfitter and professional hunter Collin van Vliet.

THE HUNT

Fair-Chase Buffalo, On Foot

Buffalo hunting at Tolile Lodge is fair chase — wild, free-ranging animals across extensive Limpopo bushveld, not confined stock. Every hunt runs within annual quotas set by Limpopo Province’s conservation authority, and hunting revenue is what funds anti-poaching and habitat management on the reserve. You’ll hunt on foot with Collin van Vliet, our outfitter and professional hunter, and an experienced tracking team — working fresh sign until you’re within range, the same standard we apply across all 40+ species on the property.

SEASON & CONDITIONS

When to Hunt

Hunting season at Tolile Lodge runs April through November, the dry season, when thinned bush and cooler weather make for easier tracking. Mornings and evenings are cool — near freezing in June and July — with warm, dry days in between. Non-hunting stays at the lodge are welcome year-round.

Buffalo and 40+ Species, Without Leaving the Lodge

Because dangerous game and plains game share the same 11,000+ acre property, a buffalo hunt doesn’t mean driving to a different outfitter’s concession to cover the rest of your species list — kudu, sable, roan, impala, and more are hunted from the same lodge, on the same trip.

COSTS

Day Rates & Trophy Fees

Dangerous-game hunting is $850 per person, per day, alongside the day rates below. Buffalo trophy fees are quoted per animal and grade — see the current price list, or ask Collin & Louise for a quote built around your species list.

RIFLE & IMPORT

Bringing or Hiring a Rifle

South African outfitters require a minimum of .375 caliber for dangerous game as standard practice; .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffery, .458 Win Mag or Lott, and .470 Nitro Express are common step-ups, with both soft and semi-solid ammunition recommended. Bring your own rifle with a temporary South African firearm import permit, or hire one at the lodge — rifle rental is $40/day, with ammunition from $7/round depending on caliber. Up to 200 rounds per firearm/caliber are allowed into South Africa. No separate hunting license is needed: you hunt under our registered outfitter and PH, and we arrange the provincial permits.

Typically 6–12 weeks from departure to delivery at your taxidermist, covering dip-and-ship processing, CITES export, and US Fish & Wildlife import clearance. We recommend working with a licensed US customs broker who specializes in wildlife imports.

When is the best time to hunt buffalo?
